From dance and music to storytelling and installation art, we have created a variety of film content for the First Light Festival since 2020.

Working as a creative duo, myself and Will Fielding, have worked for First Light Festival on a variety of projects (scroll down to see our portfolio). A particular highlight was the creation of a mini-series of films for First Light Festival’s virtual community celebration of the ‘Winter Solstice’ - during the time of lockdown. We worked as an extension of their team and in collaboration with their partners, set designer and network of local talent. Together we produced, storyboarded, directed, shot and edited each film to be both a reflection the vision of each artist and to be virtually experienced as an online arts event. We also had the opportunity to offer work experience and engage with the wider community. We continue to produce video content supporting the festival and its community interest projects.

1 | First Flight (Documentary Format | Community Impact)

Over a six month period, we created and produced the story-line of a short film documenting the impact of the ‘First Flight’ community arts project around Lowestoft. The project took bird boxes as its inspiration to accessibly engage the local community, businesses and schools in raising awareness of the importance of bird habitats in an urban, local context ahead of COP26. We worked with Festival partners, including the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

2 | How Night Came from the Sea (Narrative Short Film)

Working with Wonderful Beast, the theatre company of myths, legends, folk and fairy tales, we created the family-friendly film, ‘How Night Came from the Sea’. A magical creation story from Brazil, told in Lowestoft by actor Hilary Greatorex and accompanied with music by Sylvia Hallett.

3 | Dusk Dance (Dance Performance Video)

Set during dusk over the North sea and accompanied by music from Issac Lee-Kronick, choreographer Rosemary Lee's ‘Dusk Dance’ is inspired by the folk traditions of men dancing together on the winter solstice. This film captures the sensitive performance of a trio of young male dancers from DanceEast, ranging in age from 11 to 25.

4 | The Light Returns (Music Video)

John Ward Band performs 'The Light Returns', a new composition in celebration of First Light’s themes of day and night, the sea and the elements, and the history and future of Lowestoft. The film also features a reprise from the local choir, The Pakefield Singers.

5 | Wheel

'Wheel' is an 18ft installation designed by artist John Christie, with phrases engraved within it from a newly commissioned poem by award winning poet and author George Szirtes Poet . Evoking a wheel of time, the film captures the spectacular light-show of the Wheel with musical accompaniment from The Rogue Shanty Buoys.

6 | Summer Solstice Sunrise

We captured the summer solstice sunrise at England’s most easterly point, Lowestoft’s South Beach. Featured is the public installation of artist Adam Bridgland’s Daily Essentials, a musical performance from Kosmos and the local community of early risers and brave sea swimmers.

7 | Longest Days of Summer (Festival Highlights Video)

We created a highlights video of the weekend festival of visual art and music on the vast expanse of Lowestoft’s beautiful South Beach, featuring the town-wide art installation that showcased creativity and participation.
